IACCSEA welcomes two new European ECAs
IACCSEA welcomes the advancement of two Emission Control Areas (ECAs) in Northern Europe – each a significant step toward cleaner shipping.
The Norwegian Sea ECA was formally adopted by the IMO in December 2023 and will enter into force on 1 March 2026. It includes both SOx and NOx controls, with Tier III NOx standards applying to new ships operating in the area from the enforcement date. This reflects a growing commitment to address air pollution and its impacts on human health and the environment.
The North-East Atlantic ECA was approved at MEPC 83 in April 2025 and is expected to be formally adopted in October 2025, with entry into force planned for 2027. It will include SOx limits and, importantly, provisions for NOx Tier III requirements for new vessels, currently proposed as follows:
🚢 Contracted on or after 1 January 2027, or
🚢 In the absence of a building contract, keel laid on or after 1 July 2027, or
🚢 Delivered on or after 1 January 2031
(These dates are subject to change upon the formal adoption of the MARPOL Annex VI amendments.)
